Proc. IFIP'94
We explain the role of autonomous virtual humans in virtual reality. We discuss the importance of communication between virtual humans and real ones and the concept of presence. We present a research prototype system for animating autonomous virtual humans in virtual reality. We then explore the impact of this new technology in various disciplines. In particular, we emphasize medical applications in the area of surgery, orthopedics, plastic surgery and psychiatry
