Chemistry and biology of Anachelin and derivatives
Bethuel, Yann
2005
Iron is an essential nutrient for virtually all forms of life. To overcome its extreme insolubility, many microbes synthesize and excrete powerful iron-selective chelating agents, so-called siderophores. Anachelin H (A) was recently isolated from the cyanobacterium Anabaena cylindrica and postulated to serve as siderophore. However, both its constitution, the relative and absolute configuration of four stereogenic centers as well as its mechanism of action and its biological function remained unknown. This thesis will detail the first total synthesis of anachelin H and demonstrate that anachelin behaves as a natural product hybrid.
