River Flow 2020: the 10th Conference on Fluvial Hydraulics

Depending on their characteristics and management, man-made reservoirs can have a significant impact on the natural sediment continuity of rivers. We classify different reservoir types and describe potential risks for the dam and downstream river reach. Our conclusions are based on data from literature, a large survey amongst sixty-nine Swiss hydropower operators and an extensive geodata set on the eco-morphology of national rivers. We give an overview over the present-day impact from sediments experienced inside and at the tailwater section of Swiss res-ervoirs, attribute those to different reservoir types and establish a link to sediment continuity across reservoirs. In this context, we summarize traditional and innovative mitigation methods, aiming for the reestablishment of the sediment flow continuity along the entire river system and we suggest their implementation and design with regards to the reservoir type.
