Abstract

During the life of a structure, this one will be subject to a large number of solicitations. The objective of the civil engineer is to understand the behaviour of structures when they are subject to actions to ensure that these actions will not lead to failure. In order to do this, each part of a tructure has a specific purpose with respect to a solicitation. In this project, the type of action which will be studied is the seismic one. The seismic loading has several peculiarities: it loads the structure dynamically, it is very short (in comparison with the whole life of the structure) and it loads the structure horizontally. In the case of a building, the role of the earthquake-resistant walls is to maintain the structure during this type of solicitation. By their rigidity they provide a connecting element ensuring the solidarity between the different parts of the structure.
