Biologic tissues such as the annulus fibrosus of the intervertebral disc present viscoelastic and anisotropic responses to mechanical loading. The objective of this semester project is to propose a method to implement routinely anisotropy-modelling in the lab's work. In particular, this projects proposes to assess the orientation of type II collagen fibers in single lamellaes of the (porcine) annulus fibrosus using various imagery techniques. Orientations were determined using a custom made algorithm that provided the data required to define material orientations in the commercial finite element package ABAQUS.
