Adaptive Traffic Signal Control Using Vehicles’ Delay Times

NEARCTIS 3rd Workshop

This paper deals with a new approach to control traffic lights at isolated intersections. Delay times of vehicles are measured and utilized to adjust green times. The controlling scheme acts as follows: As soon as the accumulated delay times of vehicles on an approach are minimized to zero, the running green phase is terminated. To evaluate which basic conditions are necessary to make this new device successfully work, a simulation study was done. First simulation based results show promising benefits towards conventional control schemes.
