SBB Reuss hydroelectric cascade

Dross, Lucie
October 7, 2023

The Reuss cascade provides electricity to the Gotthard railway tunnel and produces 3.12 % of the Swiss domestic production of hydroelectricity. Despite its importance, very few research has been conducted on the cascade, its infrastructures, its impacts on the environment and its sedimentary budget. This work aims at collecting, organizing and model all available data regarding the Reuss cascade to assess what information is still unknown and needed in order to have a deeper knowledge of the structure and its impacts. Using databases and software, all the available information about the cascade’s infrastructures such as reservoirs but also catchments was gathered and showcased in a geo-referenced database. The outline of a model was also started, including all the natural elements of the cascade and the meteorological stations at disposition. The database created in this project can be used as a base for further studies of the cascade. Henceforward, studies from other reservoirs could be used as an inspiration of the kind of data that would be interesting to have on the Reuss cascade such as the sedimentary budget, the stratification inside the reservoirs and the potential solutions that could be applied for sedimentation and other problems.
