Comparative Design of Two-Storey Buildings Using the New Eurocode 8
This project aims to explore the next revision of Eurocode 8 for the seismic design of steel build-ings. A comprehensive comparative analysis was conducted between SIA standards and the new Eurocode 8, with additional comparisons to the current Eurocode. The focus was on the design of Frames with Eccentric Bracing (EBFs) and Moment Resisting Frames (MRFs). Key findings include the introduction of new ductility classes and interstorey drift limits at the Sig-nificant Damage (SD) Limit State. This study specifically examined ductility class DC2, which follows a Capacity Design approach, highlighting its advantages over Conventional Design. The applications of these findings was demonstrated through the design of three two-storey steel buildings, showcasing differences in EBF configurations and design approaches. The comparison of these buildings provided valuable insights. Interesting observations were made in the comparison of Building 1 and Building 2, illustrating how a split-k EBF configuration presents advantages over d-braced EBF, including smaller profile sizes and simpler connec-tions. Additionally, comparing Building 1 and Building 3 revealed that while the beam profile sizes had to be increased, the axial forces remained similar, resulting in no need to change the sizes of the columns and braces. Consequently the connection for Building 3 were sim-ilar to those in Building 1. These findings suggest that using DC2 is a practical and efficient introduction to Capacity Design, offering a balanced approach without the full leap to high duc-tility classes. This study contributes to the understanding and application of the next revision Eurocode 8 which has not been published yet.
