Augmentation of the Panorama of the Battle of Murten (1893) - Experimental Annotation System for the World Largest Digital Image of a Single Object
The subject of Scholarly Edition and Digital Scholarly Edition has predominantly revolved around text-based content, a phenomenon attributed to historical and technical reasons. Throughout history, including visual material in books has been prohibitively expensive, even with the advent of printing technology. Additionally, annotating visual material in books, particularly when it's large and of unusual format, is constrained by various factors such as page size, aspect ratio, reader habits, typesetting, and printing quality. However, digital tools enable us to reimagine our approach to this challenge. This new approach finds exemplification in various domains, such as film and virtual worlds. Leveraging recent advancements in digital imaging, streaming technology, and semantic web technologies, this paper presents our approach to developing a novel semantic annotation platform for visual cultural heritage.
