Paradigms of participation
Participation is a fundamental ethos of memory institutions around the globe, whose remit has shifted in recent decades from archiving and conserving world treasures to an obligation to engage citizens and and communities with their collections and the life of the organization. “Paradigms of participation” supports museum professionals in harnessing new modalities of museological participation with heritage artefacts, distinct from commercial tropes of engagement presented as immersive experiences. The chapter also provides an overview of new theories of museological participation in a post-digital age. It demonstrates the power of participation arising from the melding of cultural deep fakes with affective kinaesthetic installations in museums, with specific instances from Deep Fakes: Art and Its Double.
