Deep Fakes

As emerging technologies converge with the cultural heritage domain, new and powerful encounters with digital objects are being forged. ”New Mimetics” explores the affordances of cultural deep fakes to offer a novel theoretical grounding for performative and interactive museological objects in a post-digital age. It traces shifting understandings of the age-old notion of mimesis, as well as more recent theories of objecthood, presence, and aesthetics. As cognitive prostheses are transforming how museum visitors apprehend computational objects, digital repositories and metadata are being opened for meaningful public exploration. The chapter additionally reflects on the mimetic power of interactive kinaesthetic museum platforms and experimental museology approaches.
