Neuromuscular fatigue and gait responses to running at and above critical speed
Despite extensive research on running-induced neuromuscular fatigue and gait strategies independently, no studies have examined their interplay these measures during constant-pace running above or at critical speed. Purpose . This study examined whether knee extensor (KE) neuromuscular fatigue was associated with alterations in gait in recreational runners. Methods. Fifteen recreational runners (6 female, 9 male) completed two constant-paced runs on a flat non-motorized treadmill at 10% above and at critical speed (CS + 10 & CS, respectively) until volitional exhaustion. Maximal voluntary isometric KE contractions (MVC) with peripheral nerve stimulation and spatiotemporal gait parameters were collected pre- and post-run. Results. At both running speeds, participants exhibited reductions in MVC force, voluntary activation, as well as potentiated twitch force and twitch rate of force development (Ptw RFD ) (all p < 0.001). No significant changes were observed in MVC rate of force development (MVC RFD ). Runners also demonstrated decreased stride frequency and contact time, alongside increased stride length, flight time, and duty factor (i.e., the relative duration of flight time to step time) at both speeds (all p < 0.001). Linear mixed-effects models demonstrated speed-dependent relationships between changes in stride frequency and stride length with MVC force (marginal R²=0.38–0.46, conditional R²=0.49–0.51, p < 0.001). Weaker relationships were observed between flight time, contact time, and duty factor with decreased muscle contractile function, MVC RFD , and Ptw RFD (marginal R²=0.16–0.31, conditional R²=0.22–0.40, p ≤ 0.05). Conclusion. These findings suggest that running-induced neuromuscular fatigue modulates gait strategies during running above and at critical speed in a speed-dependent manner.
