We present a new type of metallic cathode, reaching quantum efficiency of 10(3). This value together with the estimated emittance, gives a brilliance of 2.8x10(13) A/m(2), making this cathode an excellent candidate for an ultrashort electron source. (C) 2011 Optical Society of America
