Reclaiming the Flon Platform identity : a Reconversion of the Entrepôt Fédéral through Art & Craft, and Food Production

Caloz, Louis
2024

The Flon platform in central Lausanne was initiated by the wealthy Mercier family in the late nineteenth century for industrial purposes and has since undergone an intricate evolution. This privately owned district has faced ongoing public-private debates and significant opposition from local residents due to conflicting values and frustration regarding the area’s gentrification. At the core of this platform stands the Entrepôt Fédéral, the first building of the industrial district, which dictated its strict organisation. Constructed in 1884, the old warehouse has never been fully reconsidered and has only undergone various ad hoc transformations, greatly disrupting its original layout, and now struggles to find its purpose. The project aims to leverage this situation to address both issues by restoring the initial qualities of the building and striving to align it with the convictions of Lausanne’s residents. Through a larger roof opening and a light metallic structure, the initial central outdoor courtyard is restored, influencing the entire organisation of the building and providing open inner facades. Turned into a cultural and living hub it features two intertwined program categories. One focuses on art and craft, echoing the vibrant Flon alternatif of the 1990s, while the other centres on food production, reminiscent of the valley's fertile past. It intends to breathe new life into this iconic building, while confronting gentrification through a more vivid and local approach.
