Simulation and Modelization of Kirigami Inspired Metamaterial

Lang, Guilain
June 4, 2020

The kirigami pattern presents the particular behavior to be extensively stretchable. Indeed, a preliminary study conducted by the LAI has shown that once a critical tension is reached, the structure enters into a specific buckling mode which allows high strain level. Moreover, only little non-linearity are observed in its strain-stress response even for strain value as high as 10%. The unique behavior of the kirigami pattern and its symmetry make it a strong candidate for a new generation of meta-material with controlled Young modulus. This study aims to create a model of this pattern to fill the gap of knowledge on its performances and it lays the groundwork for future optimization of the geometry. The only focus of this study is the virtual Young's modulus. To respect project's time restriction, we intentionally do not study any other effects such as the critical force or stress concentration.
