Soothing house. How housing does mitigate time pressures?
For many years, an abundant literature has highlighted the time pressures induced by the more and more intricated and difficult work life balance. As it happens at home, in this paper we explore the hypothesis that housing is a resource to mitigate time pressures. In this perspective, the first contribution of this paper is to quantify the determinants that are often positively correlated with domestic time pressure. The second contribution is to integrate latent alleviating factors that tend to lower time pressure at home. The explanatory variables have been taken from a self-administered web-based survey of 2288 respondents in Geneva, Switzerland (representative population). The analysis is based on a structural equation modelling approach. The estimated model indicates factors that affect or alleviate domestic time pressure. In terms of alleviating factors, satisfaction with cohabitation prevails over satisfaction with housing characteristics. Finally, our analysis suggest the soothing effect of housing satisfaction and satisfaction with cohabitation on domestic and work time pressures.
