Localized radiant heating and cooling impact on thermal comfort and energy use - Experimental climatic chamber study

Houtart, Diego Rodrigue E
January 19, 2024

This study explores the efficacy of localized radiant heating floors on comfort and energy use in controlled environments. A series of experiments were conducted in a climatic chamber with a thermal manikin to test various layouts of heated floor surfaces. The findings indicate that while global com-fort, as measured by the predicted mean vote (PMV), requires further fine-tuning, localized radiant heating can maintain a low risk of local discomfort. However, methodological challenges limited a clear understanding of the specific impact on energy use. These results highlight the potential and complexities of implementing targeted radiant heating solutions for sustainable and comfortable indoor environments.
