Selective elimination of either one or two mols. of hydrogen halide from vicinal dihalides can be conveniently achieved by employing solid NaOH or KOH in the presence of solvents such as glycol di-Me ether or tetraethylene glycol di-Me ether. [on SciFinder (R)]
