Abstract

Hepatitis E virus (HEV) is among the major causes of acute viral hepatitis worldwide. In developing countries, HEV infections are caused by genotypes 1 and 2, due to consumption of contaminated water. Large and recurrent outbreaks of HEV occur in specific geographical areas.
