Nanopore forming method and uses thereof

The invention relates to a method for making nanopores in thin layers or monolayers of transition metal dichalcogenides that enables accurate and controllable formation of pore within those thin layer(s) with subnanometer precision. The nanopore is formed by applying a DC transmembrane voltage while monitoring the ionic current through the membrane. When the ionic current reaches a given threshold, the transmembrane voltage is turned off.
