Sensorless Position Detection of a Linear Actuator

The goal of the project is to explore the possibility of controlling the speed of the actuator’s moving part without using any sensor. The speed has to be set accordingly to the position of the moving part at specific time. This dependency is fixed and is provided by the industrial partner as a result of measurements, estimations and modeling. Sensorless detection means that the current needed to be applied to the coil in order to close the contacts, will also be the only feedback information for estimating the position of the actuator. This way, use of any kind of sensor will be avoided, significantly simplifying the system implementation and lowering the cost. The general idea, proposed solution and measurements results will be presented in this work, as well as the prototype hardware implementation. Also it includes proving the feasibility of this kind of system to be implemented, as well as describing possible problems and improvements.
