Abstract

Developing a Trauma Patient Simulator is a very ambitious project that goes far beyond what can be expected for a master thesis. Therefore, it has been decided to focus on blood circulation which is one of the three vital functions described in the first aid instruction guide [1]. The goal was to build two human legs in order to simulate two different wounds described in the first aid instruction guide. Both of them involve bleeding issues. The first leg would duplicate a bullet injury with a bone fracture while the second one would duplicate an amputation below the knee. A way to reproduce realistic human legs and blood circulation has been explored. It appeared that a system that could duplicate the pulse feeling was necessary as the rescuers are trained to measure it. In fact, checking the pulse is one of the first tasks that rescuers should perform to gather a rapid evaluation of the patient state. Measuring the heartbeat rate as well as the blood pressure can give precious information and help to choose suitable life saving measures. The necessity of reproducing the pulse feeling on the mannequin appeared to be obvious. Also, the Touch Laboratory is mainly working on this topic. Therefore, it has been decided for this master project to focus on the development of a system called ‘pulse generator’. This master project has been divided into different tasks mentioned as follow. • Designing the pulse generator system. • Making all the plans. • Machining all the parts in the IITM workshop. • Ordering all the components such as sensors, actuators etc… • Writing a LABVIEW program to control the pulse generator. • Mounting the entire installation. • Building a mathematical model to simulate the pulse generated by the system
