Surveilled Domesticity, Michohistories of Modern Architectural History
The talk Surveilled Domesticity exposed the relationship between residents and the company’s real estate in the company town of Dalmine, Italy. Rent contracts unveil the intricate dynamics between the company and its tenants within company towns. These contracts provide evidence of the company’s authoritative control over the domestic lives of its workers, exerting influence by regulating living conditions and determining residency rights, thereby shaping the social fabric of the company town. Accordingly, other cases of company towns had similar dynamics leading to the company’s control over the domestic space of its workers. The talk has been organised by Daniela Ortiz dos Santos in the scope of the Seminar „Michohistories of Modern Architectural History,“ offered in the Summer Semester 2025 at the Art History Department of the Goethe University Frankfurt. This seminar proposes a series of encounters, conversations and reflections on microhistory and its reverberations in architectural history.
