Modeling and simulation of a linear actuator and its load

Favre, Marc
January 8, 2021

Linear reluctant actuators are simple and affordable devices that produce a displacement with a simple ON-OFF control. These are used only with variable-voltage variable-frequency static power converters or voltage-source inverters to obtain good energy conversion efficiencies and controlled thrust or positioning1. Tubular induction actuators with solid steel rotor and sleeve rotor with solid steel core have found application in areas where short linear movement is required, for example in opening and closing valves2. However, the instantaneous displacement is highly dependent on the mechanical load and therefore on the frequency at which they operate.
