Liquid encapsulated drug delivery device for acoustically-controlled release
Triggered release drug delivery is an innovative alternative to more intrusive ways of administrating a pharmaceutical compound. It allows precise location and timing of delivery with minimum harm to the patient. In the case of this project, the trigger is acoustic waves which activates the release of drug encapsulated into micro-devices that have previously been inserted into the patient's body. Those devices are a combination of a main body surrounding the drug and a sealing layer preventing the latter to spill (Figure 1). By a process explained later on, the acoustic waves' actuation will either separate the sealing layer from the main body or simply break it to release the drug at the desired location.
