SWICE Wellbeing Workshop Report 06-2023

Nick, Sascha
September 1, 2023

On 23.06.2023, during the SWICE 2023 Annual Conference, a wellbeing workshop was organized, covering this central topic of SWICE (Sustainable Wellbeing for the Individual and the Collectivity in the Energy transition), focused on three main topics: understanding wellbeing; measuring wellbeing indicators (health, autonomy, participation); and distinguishing health-related satisfiers from needs. Five main insights emerged: (1) A holistic understanding of wellbeing is key; (2) Measurement complexity - common metrics are needed; (3) Health, autonomy, and participation may need multiple measurement approaches, but comparability across the project must be ensured; (4) Challenges in liberal / individualistic societies which tend to ignore immaterial needs; and (5) A participatory approach is an effective way to understand and develop concepts and methods around wellbeing.
