To improve the efficiency of inductive power transfer (IPT) systems, it is beneficial to maximize the power transfer by enhancing the quality factor of coils and the coupling between them. Therefore, it is crucial to rely on accurate, flexible, and practical models to perform a successful design optimization of the coils and to improve their quality factor. This paper focuses on the inductance model selection and compares different modeling methods reported in the literature in terms of accuracy, implementation ease, and flexibility to address design variations. The results of the analyzed methods are compared with 2D and 3D FEM simulations and measurements on prototyped coils with different characteristics. The analysis and measurements provide a direct comparison and allow the selection of suitable models for subsequent design optimization.
