Material flow analysis (MFA) is a method to describe and analyze the material and energy balance of a firm, a region, or a nation. It is based on the law of matter conservation and is defined by a geographic system boundary, a time span within which the analysis is per- formed, processes which depict human activities, and flows of goods, matter, or energy between these processes.
