Advances in computer animation are more apparent with the explosion in satellite television. This feature explores the concept of synthetic actors, a combination of diverse methods of computerised animation. The boom in satellite broadcasting and the proliferation of extra channels demand advances in computer simulated motion. The concept of the synthetic actor represents a fusing of previously separate aspects of animation and is a qualitative leap forward. Synthetic actors have scientific as well as artistic applications. They enable the simulation of physiological disorders and the effects of accidents, explosions, etc., on the human body. The difficulties in creating synthetic actors-3D characters with the behaviour of real people-are outlined
