On the origin of chaos in gearbox models

Physica D: Nonlinear Phenomena

Discrete dissipative mappings are derived from the dynamics of gearboxes modelled mathematically in mechanical engineering. In a special regime, we are able to derive a mapping which belongs to the class of Fermi accelarator systems. These systems exhibit chaotic behaviours. Therefore, the chaos observed in numerical calculations of gearbox systems is understood from a theoretical point of view. © 1988.
