(FR) Dans les régimes de brevets d’invention qui se mettent en place au XVIIIe siècle, d’abord en Angleterre puis aux États-Unis et en France, la description (par le texte, l’image, le modèle, l’échantillon) occupe un rôle central. Elle permet d’opérationnaliser l’idée de contrat au fondement du brevet : protection contre divulgation. D’année en année, les « specifications » anglaises et américaines et les « mémoires descriptifs et explicatifs » français viennent alimenter une immense littérature technologique, dont la particularité est d’être (en principe) écrite par les inventeurs eux-mêmes. Dans cette communication, je propose d’explorer les styles et les techniques de représentation mis en œuvre dans les brevets d’invention, principalement en France, mais aussi en comparaison avec l’Angleterre et les États-Unis. L’étude de la diversité et de l’évolution de ces représentations dessine en creux tout à la fois une histoire renouvelée des brevets et de leurs usages, et une histoire de la pensée de la technique au XIXe siècle. (ENG) Technology and patents in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries Description (through texts, images, models or samples) played a central role in the patent systems that emerged in the eighteenth century, first in England, later in the United States and in France. Description ensured that the contract—protection in exchange for disclosure of the invention— justifying the existence of patents worked not only in theory but also in practice. Gradually, English and American “specifications” and French “mémoires descriptifs et explicatifs” contributed to a large body of technological literature, the particularity of which is that it was (in principle) written by the inventors themselves. In this talk, I explore the styles and techniques of representation which were used in patents, mainly in France, in comparison with England and the United States. From the study of the diversity and evolution of these representations emerge a history of patents and their uses, and at the same time a history of technological thinking in the nineteenth century.
