The paper presents an automated single-end FPGA-based fault location system for AC/DC power networks. The proposed system is based on the electromagnetic time reversal theory and uses an automated FPGA-based real-time simulator to perform the fault location process. The high accuracy and reliability of the EMTR-based fault location method are integrated with the high computational power and time determinism of FGPAs to develop a fast and accurate fault location system. The performance of the developed system is validated by making reference to a multi-terminal HVDC grid and a radial power distribution network.
