Achevée en 1957, la Nouvelle buvette de la Source Cachat à Évian-les-Bains est à classer parmi les icônes du XXe siècle. Le bâtiment est issu de la collaboration fructueuse entre un architecte expérimenté, Maurice Novarina, un « constructeur génial », Jean Prouvé, et un architecte-­ingénieur, Serge Ketoff, capable de conjuguer une très grande sensibilité plastique à la rigueur du calcul structurel. Le résultat de cette aventure collective est épatant : un objet technique d’une originalité indéniable, une pièce de bravoure conduite avec brio qui va bien au-delà de la mise en scène de matériaux industriels. Mécanique de précision plutôt que simple Meccano, ce chef-d’œuvre que Jean Prouvé chérissait tout particulièrement est un assemblage très habile d’éléments et composants divers. Parfaitement intégrée dans le paysage de la ville thermale d’Évian, sur les rives du lac Léman, la buvette mérite une nouvelle reconnaissance. Issue des études préalables au chantier de restauration, cette première monographie souhaite y contribuer. Completed in 1957, the Nouvelle Buvette de la Source Cachat – or Pump Room for the Cachat springs – at Évian-les-Bains is ranked as a twentieth century icon. The building was the product of fruitful collaboration by a team capable of combining tremendous plastic sensitivity with precise structural rigour: Maurice Novarina, an experienced architect; the “construction genius” Jean Prouvé; and architect­-engineer Serge Ketoff. From their collective exploit came a technical object of undoubted originality, a daring performance delivered with gusto – this was much more than just industrial materials made to look good. Precision mechanics rather than Meccano, this masterpiece so cherished by Jean Prouvé is an impeccably calibrated assemblage of very different elements and components. The Buvette seems to inhabit perfectly the urban landscape of Évian, on the shores of Lake Geneva. As part of the analysis undertaken prior to the program of conservation, this initial monograph is intended to help win back the recognition it so clearly deserves.
