Structures and Architecture REstructure REmaterialize REthink REuse
6th International Conference on Structures and Architecture

This paper presents a standardized assessment method to evaluate the reuse potential of building components, addressing the construction industry's need for sustainable resource management. The procedure relies on basic data about the assessed building, without requiring on-site visits or detailed specifications. The tool provides an automated, adaptable, iterative framework progressing through four phases-rough, adjusted, refined, and bespoke-to offer increasing specificity in reuse assessments. It enables initial evaluation of the time and budget required for deconstruction, transformation, and sale. Applied to a house in New York State, USA, the tool demonstrates practical utility in generating accurate, data-driven reuse potential estimates. A selected assessment phase compared results with the actual deconstruction, confirming the tool's predictive reliability. While this study relies on a single case, the phased methodology ensures progressive refinements that validate the accuracy of assumptions. The approach provides a structured, adaptable framework applicable to diverse buildings and regions.
