Space Sustainability & Global Coordination
December 2, 2024
Space activities generate significant and varied benefits for humanity, but also lead to major environmental and social issues, exacerbating multiple existing challenges of society, and risking limiting their own ability to continue. Existing governance mechanisms have not been successful to date. Here we propose taking the perspective of global commons, and adapting Elinor Ostrom’s principles for governing the commons to specificity of space, as a basis for future international cooperation.
